Halo basics

The Halo games have been a momentous hit on the Xbox gaming systems, bringing heavy plaudits deserved to the amount of depth that has been put into this first person shooter game.  Part of this is owed to the Halo theme which details struggles that span multiple worlds and has the potential to affect billions of lives.  If you are new to the wonderful universe of Halo you should read this quick guide to the groups that are involved in the battle for victory.

Humankind

One of the Halo species that have a large part in the Halo battle is the human race.  The reason that they are fighting in the battle for Halo is to prevent the extinction of their species at the hands of an aliens.  Prior to the start of the Halo series, human beings had been fighting a losing war in this respect, with most of its colony worlds wiped out.  Figuring largely in the humans’ battle plans are the SPARTAN super-soldiers who received mental and physical enhancements to better counterpunch the alien attack.

The Covenant

The Covenant makes up the main antagonist to the human forces in the Halo series with their troops attempting to eradicate humans from the known universe.  This is due to unknown reasons though it seems to be some kind of holy crusade because the Covenant is a theocracy.  However, as the Halo series progresses, the Covenant develops ruptures, most notably between the Elites, the Covenants’ own cast of mighty soldiers and the rest of the covenant with a few factions even allying themselves with the human race.

The Flood and the Forerunners

To add to mankind’s woes the Halo world also includes the Flood and the Forerunners.  These were uncovered as the game moved on although to date the Forerunners have not actually been seen.  The Flood are a parasitic life form that infect other forms of life to feed from them and reproduce.  The Forerunners, we discovered as the game progressed, created the worlds of Halo as a place to study the Flood.
